Three spherical spiral unit cells.
This set of animations shows the electric field in the mouth of an aperture antenna:
Left side: In the absence of metamaterial loading, the electric field is linearly polarized.
Center: With metamaterial unit cells oriented horizontally, the electric field exhibits left-hand (clockwise) circular polarization.
Right side: With metamaterial unit cells oriented vertically, the electric field exhibits right-hand (counterclockwise) circular polarization.
