Led by Dr. Xu, UNC Charlotte received a Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) award from National Science Foundation in 2008. The award was used to establish a Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) facility at UNC Charlotte. A Ph.D.-level electron microscopist was also hired to provide adaquate support for the facility. Equipment available in the facility include a JEOL JEM 2100 LaB6 Transmission Electron Microscope, an Oxford INCA EDS system, and several sample preparation tools. The facility is being used by researchers from different departments and programs such as Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics and Nanoscale Science for research and teaching.
