Dr. Williams is mentoring a group of five undergraduates in a senior design project focused on integrating a magnetic gear into the drive train of a wind turbine.  The students, who come from the departments of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Technology, will spend two semesters defining the problem, developing conceptual and detailed design, producing engineering documentation, building, and testing their design.  Offshore energy generation is seen as an attractive application for magnetic gears, where there non-contact transmission of torque can provide inherent overload protection and eliminate some wear mechanisms.

Plant tour of Keller Technology Corporation

http://www.kellertechnology.com/

Several faculty and students in the Applied Energy and Electromechanical Systems program enjoyed a tour of Keller Technology Corporation in Huntersville today.  KTC does the custom design, engineering, manufacture, assembly, and testing of manufacturing systems for industrial and medical customers, as well as precision equipment for scientific customers.  It was nice to see a lot of the elements of the curriculum (PLCs, robotics, machine vision, etc.) present in various builds that we saw on the tour.  Special thanks to William Bryan for hosting us today.

Applied Energy grads land jobs near and far

Chris Benfield, a December graduate of Applied Energy program, has started his job at Hewlett Package near Boise, Idaho.  Chris worked on a variety for me at the university including work on electrostatic sensors and the Mission Critical Operations project.  Matt Calvin has accepted a position at Central Piedmont Community College, where he is slated to start teaching PLC classes in the fall.  Matt, a May graduate, was an important undergraduate and graduate research assistant working on the various magnetic gearing projects.

Summer Staffing Additions

Summer time is research time on campus and I’ve added a few research assistants to the summer roster.
  • Cameron Nye is a recent graduate of the Electrical Engineering Technology program and will be starting his MS in Applied Energy and Electomechanical Systems this fall.  He is working on the Mission Critical Operations project doing PLC programming and lab exercise development.
  •  Josh Warne is a senior in the Mechanical Engineering Technology program and is working the Magnetic Gearing team, focusing on the gearbox testbed.
