Dr. Williams is mentoring a group of five undergraduates in a senior design project focused on integrating a magnetic gear into the drive train of a wind turbine. The students, who come from the departments of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Technology, will spend two semesters defining the problem, developing conceptual and detailed design, producing engineering documentation, building, and testing their design. Offshore energy generation is seen as an attractive application for magnetic gears, where there non-contact transmission of torque can provide inherent overload protection and eliminate some wear mechanisms.
