Dr. Tipton to be Member of ASTM Subcommittee on PFAS Substances

Dr. Roger Tipton is excited to announce that he will be a member of the ASTM subcommittee F15.81 on Per-and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances.

The Mission of ASTM Subcommittee F15.81

The ASTM Subcommittee F15.81 operates under the jurisdiction of ASTM’s consumer products committee (F15). Our mission is to develop standards that provide guidance on how to prepare and analyze a wide variety of consumer product samples for PFAS. PFAS are a group of chemicals used to make fluoropolymer coatings and products that resist heat, oil, stains, grease, and water.

The Importance of Our Work

PFAS are intentionally added to or inadvertently present as a component in a significant number of consumer products. The standards we develop will provide useful information to legislative and regulatory bodies and trade associations regarding the presence and levels of PFAS in consumer products. This work directly relates to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals #3 on good health and well-being, #6 on clean water, and #14 on life below water.

My Role in the Subcommittee

As a member of the subcommittee, I contribute my expertise in materials science and engineering to the development of these standards. My background in industry and academia allows me to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. I collaborate with other experts in the field, including material scientists, chemical and biomedical engineers, mechanical engineers, and others, to tackle the complex challenges associated with PFAS.

The Impact of Our Work

The standards developed by our subcommittee will focus on PFAS compounds that are of greatest pertinence to human and environmental health. By providing clear guidelines for the preparation and analysis of consumer product samples for PFAS, we aim to facilitate the identification and mitigation of potential risks associated with these substances.

In conclusion, being a part of ASTM Subcommittee F15.81 is a rewarding experience. It allows me to apply my knowledge and skills towards addressing a significant environmental and health issue. I look forward to continuing this important work and contributing to a safer and more sustainable future.
